ACAPULCO, Mexico –  The image of this beach mecca has taken a new hit from Mexico's drug violence, with 27 people killed in less than a day, including 14 men whose bodies were found with their heads chopped off at a shopping center.

Acapulco has seen fierce turf wars between drug gangs, and the bloodshed is scaring some vacationers away even though little of the violence happens in tourist areas. Read more here.

A police surveillance camera in Mexico reportedly recorded the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old Mexican teen by a U.S. Border Patrol agent early Wednesday.

Jose Larrinarga Talamantes, a spokesman for the Sonora Attorney General's Office in Hermosillo, told Nogales International that state investigators have confirmed the existence of the video with officials in Nogales, Sonora, and have asked for a copy. Read more here.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration offered a proposal on Thursday to allow long-haul Mexican trucks to move cargo in the United States.

The proposal, which the Mexican government greeted as a positive step, was the latest sign of a new willingness by the Obama administration to support free-trade measures backed by Republicans and by businesses despite objections from labor unions and other liberal constituencies. Read more here.

Doris Gómora for El Universal - Mexican cartels have established business alliances with gangs operating in places like Afganistán and Turkey, in order to obtain and smuggle drugs to supply Europe and North America, according to investigator Edgardo Buscaglia, a fellow at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM).

In an interview with EL UNIVERSAL, Buscaglia confirmed that Mexican narcotraffickers operate like multinational emissaries "to establish contacts and place operatives that can deal with the Turkish and Indian criminal organizations in order to facilitate the production and sale of drugs," specifically heroin. NOGALES, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) – Mexican officials confirm to 9 On Your Side a 17-year old teen-teenager, believed to have been shot by a U.S. Border Patrol Agent, died Wednesday morning.

The FBI would only say border patrol agents were investigating a group of drug smugglers at approximately three in the morning when rock throwers began pelting agents. The agent then opened fire. Read more here.

Arizona man gets prison in immigrant kidnapping

TUCSON - An Arizona man whose cousin was killed by illegal border crossers in a botched kidnapping plan has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Pima County prosecutors said 26-year-old Armando Villalobos Cervantes was sentenced Thursday. He pleaded guilty last month to one count of kidnapping and prosecutors dismissed 18 other kidnapping charges and a first-degree murder charge. Read more here.

New R.I. Gov. Lincoln Chafee makes life easier for illegal aliens

On Wednesday, newly installed Rhode Island governor, Lincoln Chafee rescinded an executive order put in place by his predecessor, Gov. Donald Carcieri  which ordered state agencies and their vendors to use the E-verify system to screen-out illegal aliens for employment.

Gov. Chafee also ordered the Rhode Island State Police to stop participating in the federal 287(g) program which allowed them direct access to an immigration database when they suspect an arrestee to be in the country illegally. Read more here.

On Wednesday, Gov. John Baldacci pardoned a Cambodian national who faced deportation for a fatal DUI. The man’s sister was killed in the crash.

Ten years ago, Touch Rin Svay was driving his sister and her boyfriend home from a party, when he lost control of his car, which then flipped over several times before striking a telephone pole. The 19-year-old woman was thrown from the vehicle and died on the scene. Read more here.

The U.S. Marshals Service is searching for Salvador Portillo-Saravia, 29, a previously deported gang member. He disappeared after police in Fairfax County, Virginia, issued warrants for his arrest after he allegedly raped and sodomized an 8-year-old girl.

The assault occurred on December 26 in Centreville.

Portillo-Saravia was deported six years ago, and is a member of the notoriously violent MS-13 street gang. Read more here.

Nearly a dozen Southern Arizona residents got an up-close look at what it's like to be a Border Patrol agent, right down to firing high-powered weapons and experiencing a pitch-black desert at night.

The Nogales Station of the Border Patrol's Tucson Sector held its six-week Citizen's Academy in November and December. It was the first time in a decade the station has held the academy, during which 11 people spent one day per week studying immigration law, firearms policy, Border Patrol history and tracking, among other topics. They also visited the Interstate 19 Border Patrol checkpoint north of Tubac and saw a K-9 demonstration. Read more here.

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - How many suspects are in custody with the death of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry?   As of Wednesday afternoon, a great deal of confusion still surrounded that question.

On Wednesday morning the U.S. Marshal's office told 9 On Your Side that it had a fifth suspect in custody.  An hour later, it added a sixth.   Spokesman Chris DeRosa told KGUN9 News that law enforcement officers had arrested both suspects in the area where suspected bandits murdered Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, taking them into custody shortly after the shooting. A Pinal County Sheriff's deputy who purportedly was wounded in a gunbattle with drug smugglers last year has been fired for making false statements to a journalist.

In a news release, the Sheriff's Office said Deputy Louie Puroll was terminated for 10 violations of departmental policy governing ethics violations, incompetence and truthfulness. Read more here.

The U.S. Border Patrol apprehended a member of a brutal Salvadoran gang, MS-13, who was nabbed as he walked along a busy San Diego street, the agency reported today.

The Greek government has unveiled plans to construct a wall along its 128-mile land border with Turkey in order to tackle the influx of illegal immigrants.

Interior minister Christian Papoutsis said the wall was a necessary measure after more than 100,000 people illegally entered the Mediterranean nation last year.

But the plans - which have compared with the 650-mile barrier along sections of the border between the U.S. and Mexico - have been criticised by the European Commission as a 'short-term measure'  that does not deal with the root of the problem. Read more here.

Two weeks later, the measure passed in the Senate by a vote of 80-19. The Secure Fence Act of 2006 was signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2006.

At the bill signing ceremony, Bush told reporters: “This bill will help protect the American people. This bill will make our borders more secure. It is an important step toward immigration reform.”
